You have seen it before. That fluffy, grey stuff hanging off the trees like a bad wig. It looks kind of harmless, almost pretty in a weird way. But Old Man’s Beard (Clematis vitalba) is a nightmare for our native bush. It smothers everything, blocking out the light until the trees underneath just give up and die.
If you spot this pest on your land, you need to act fast. It grows like crazy and once it takes hold, it is a real mission to clear. Here is how to spot it and, more importantly, how to kill it before it eats your forest.

Spotting the Enemy
It is easy to confuse with native clematis, but there are tell-tale signs. Native clematis usually has 3 leaflets and smooth stems. Old Man’s Beard has 5 leaflets and the stems have deep grooves running down them.
In winter, it loses its leaves but keeps those fluffy seed heads that give it the name. They look like white smoke puffing out of the canopy. If you see that “smoke” in your trees, you got a problem. The vines themselves can get huge, thick like a rope, hanging heavily from the branches they are strangling.
Why Cutting It Isn’t Enough
A lot of landowners grab a saw and just cut the vines at the bottom. That helps, sure. The top part dies off. But the roots? They are still alive and kicking. They will just shoot up fresh vines next season, probably faster than before.
To actually kill it, you need chemical control. But here is the tricky part—how do you spray a vine that is 20 meters up a Rimu tree without killing the tree itself? You can’t just blast it from the ground.
The Drone Advantage
This is where our tech shines. At Agri Drone Specialists, we use high-precision drones to target the vine foliage directly. We fly right up to the canopy.
Our equipment allows for incredibly accurate spot spraying. We can hit the Old Man’s Beard leaves while minimizing the drift onto your native trees. It is similar to the precision we use for our vineyard spraying drone services, where we have to be careful not to damage the grapes while treating the rows. We use that same steady, GPS-locked accuracy to pick off weeds in the bush.
Accessing the Impossible
Old Man’s Beard loves steep gullies and riverbanks—places where you really don’t want to be walking with a heavy spray pack. It is dangerous and slow.
Our drones fly over the wet stuff and the steep stuff without issue. We can treat a massive infestation in a fraction of the time it would take a ground crew. It is efficient, safe, and gets the chemical exactly where it needs to be.
Not Just for the Bush
While we are known for clearing scrub, this same tech works for other tough weeds too. If you have Gorse creeping into your pasture, our gorse spraying drone services use the downwash from the propellers to push the spray deep into the prickly bushes for a better kill.
Don’t let Old Man’s Beard turn your native bush into a graveyard. identifying it is step one. Step two is calling us to finish the job properly.
